1969 Chevelle ss cowl color
 

Looking for some help from the pros. My 69 ss chevelle was the top of the cowl black like the fire wall from the factory. I do believe they were all black!

Can you see the original overspray of body colour on the sides of the cowl?

Well I can see it on the top by the windshield wipers but looks like someone has painted over it with black paint

It was the same black from the windshield down to the bottom of the firewall. I have a question on the 69 SS. What was the color between the grille and the moulding on the header panel? I have one that is black but don't know if it's factory.

Correct....all were Black for the US built cars. With some overspray that when through the SS hood grills and the sides of the hood near the top edge.

Correct all 1969 SS396 Chevelles.....lower front valance were satin black.

On my black 69 SS survivor car with red gut, there is some red over-spray from painting the top of the dash, that extends just past the lower windshield stainless moulding. The rest of the cowl area is black.

Some plants painted the body color first followed by the black out paint on the firewall while other plants painted the firewall first followed by body color. Restoring the car correctly means putting the overspray back on correctly, be it body color or black overspray. In either case the cowl top is painted black.

It probably depends on the plant but I don't think the overspray came from the holes for the hood grilles because the front end /dog house was painted off the body. My K.C. built Chevelle looks like body color first, then semi gloss black were the windshield touches the cowl down the firewall. Last, the top of the dash and like Phil's car slight dash paint overspray over the cowl paint. Phil what color is the header panel above the grille and below the header panel moulding on your red car?

the header panel was all body color.
