Carpet install
 

I am replacing the carpet in my 68 Charger having gotten rid of the console and going with a Hurst Shifter. I have always installed carpet with the jute glued to the carpet but have been told recently to remove the jute and install it first then the carpet for a better fit.
If I am removing the jute, do I need it at all or should I go with Dynamat or equivalent.
Looking for best fit, not concerned with adding more sound deader.

I can't see how removing the jute could make the carpet fit better. If you don't care about sound deadening, I'd just install the carpet just like it comes with the jute in place.

Biggest thing with carpet install is to make sure the material is warm and flexible...if it was summer time I would suggest laying it out on a hot driveway first. But, since we are in the winter mode, a warm shop and a heat gun [hair dryer style] can help do the job. I see no need to remove the backing..

i had issues with the glued jute backing....seems that the carpet got bunched up and the jute got glued to the backing - thus - it would never lay nice and flat, or correctly contoured.

Also have sound the jute installed mis-aligned with the actual recesses in the floor....causing
it to have bumps where you don't want them.

It was a real PIA to take off the jute backing from the carpet....used razor blades to slice it loose - not fun.....

for me in the future, id get it uninstalled but glue it to the floor areas correctly and hope the carpet lays better.

Thanks for the imput. Fortunately the jute is not well glued to the carpet so it's coming off.
It's been laying flat for a month in a warm garage.
Have experienced prev carpet where the jute was bunched in places causing a poor install.
