Importance of Knowing Why
 

The author of this article has written on a topic without understanding why the "demographic shift" is happening.

So the Station wagon was replaced by the Mini Van. The Mini Van was replaced by the SUV and the large family car has been replaced by the cross-over. which is part car and part SUV.

to me this is pretty simple, over the past couple of decades traditional large cars are being literally regulated out of existence by the government driving customers to what ever bigger vehicle they can get.

This has happened due to increasingly stringent impact standards, fuel efficiency and finally tort consequences - because as cars have gotten lighter and more fuel efficient they are still not as safe as an equivalent vehicle with more mass.

Go sit is a new car today. You are sitting low in an environment with little visibility that to many people has a claustrophobic feel to it. Exterior styling is bland as well.

Author of the article above is stunningly clueless as to the "why"... and of course comments are disabled for the article by CNBC.

Anything I missed here? I am interested as to what you guys think.

I drive a 2004 Chevy Suburban...it's a little rough around the edges, but you sit up high, have a great view of the road, it can haul a ton of my crap to the camp and it is heavy truck which gives me the edge in a collision.

Your comments about today's vehicles being 'low-slung' with little protection are right on the money. I'll take a big tank any day, even if it does use a little more go juice.
