Hey folks
Big dummy here thought the GM 69 open element air cleaner bases were the same. The one on the left is a repo the lined up correctly on my 69 L78. The one on the right the vent tube points at incorrect angle for my application...but what is it for?
Thanks in advance

That base is for the '68 & '69 427/390 hp Corvette, the '70 Corvette 454/390 hp, the '71 Corvette 454/365 hp & 454/425 hp air cleaner. It was designed for a flat runner intake manifold.

Possibly 70 Chevelle without cowl induction. Uses bent hose to connect base to valve cover.

x2
minus that the 71 Corvette LS5 uses a dual snorkle base.
If not mistaken wouldn't the chevelle have a dual snout like Dave Beem's 4300 mile LS6?

Three possible Air cleaners were used on the 1970 Chevelle LS-6.
SS~Open Element
DG ~Cowl Ind.
CO~Dual Snorkel
Take better pics of the Air cleaner on the right & post here, include close up angle of Vent tube.

I thought that Chevy stopped using the Open Element Air Cleaner on all 1970 model cars EXCEPT the Corvette in an effort to cut back on noise levels which was a mandate by the EPA.

If that's the case then how would you tell which air cleaner came on your LS6 without Cowl Induction?

Mr70 11-04-2020 12:03 PM

A Build sheet will call out the two letter code of the AC installed. If not have a build sheet, nor a Cowl. Ind. hood, the dual snorkel will be the hardest to prove,as the majority norm was open element. The plant & the DATE the car was assembled can also help figure if it came with a Dual Snorkel,as a very, very small % of LS-6's did.

1970 Camaro L34 had an open element AC. Nova also I believe.
