Did 396 get 10.4 or 11 inch clutch

I need to order a new clutch and pressure plate for my 69 L35 car. Parts site seems to want to specify the 10.4 inch clutch, but I was under the impression that the big block cars got the 168 tooth flywheel, the 621 bell housing, and the 11 inch clutch.

Will an 11 inch clutch fit inside a 621 housing?

Yes, it should be an 11" clutch and the 621 bell will accommodate.

You could use the 10.4" clutch but I would lean toward the 11" for obvious reasons.

Should have the 11 inch clutch and 621 bell.

Just don’t buy a centerforce, research it along with vibration

McLeod is a better choice

You will, also, need the correct starter for the 168 flywheel. The one with the offset mounting holes. There are various heavy duty starters among that group too.

Starter is already there - it's the original that came with the car. This is just a replacement clutch and pressure plate.

The existing clutch is releasing fine, no slipping, chattering, etc. But it is making a "ticking" sound that increases with engine RPM, mainly in reverse, but you can hear it in the forward gears if it is coasting at around 1700 RPM and above. It sounds like it's coming from the area of the clutch to me. Has actually been doing this for a while. If I was going to take a wild-ass-guess, I would suspect that maybe a clutch hub spring is making contact with something or there is something going on with one of the diaphragm fingers. I'm going to pull it apart and inspect it - I just wanted to have a replacement clutch on hand if this is the problem.

Also going to pull the case apart on the M-20 and clean it up and reseal it. Maybe a refresh if it needs it, but it shifts perfectly.

I'm basically just looking for a decent stock replacement. This car is completely stock, and doesn't get beat on. Just a cruiser.

Doesn't sound like a throw out bearing, but never say never. I suggest getting a high quality throw out to have on hand too. If you replace the disc, you'll need to get the flywheel re-surfaced, or you could get chatter from a new disc and used surface....sequences...:rolleyes2:

Someone recommended this kit from Summit. Seems like it should work OK behind a stock L35. Anyone have one they like better?
