Diverter valve question
 

I’ve a L72 with full working smog and I have been told you can tell by sound at idle if smog is working by a small pop. This car pops louder now but runs fine and idles fine. Only car I’ve got with working smog. I was told a long time ago that a bad diverter valve would cause popping. I always gutted the pumps and wish I had done this one. Anyway only problem gutting it would be blocking off smog tubes as I hate to risk taking off tubes that have been there for a long time. Appreciate any thoughts.
