Fuel Pump Cosmetic Restoration ?????

GOAT HILL Screwed me on Restoring Two AC/Delco Dated OEM Fuel Pumps, when they did
the Bottom Portion in Clear (Silver) Zinc rather than Yellow Zinc Dichromate.........

I was "thinking" I could find a shade of "Gold" Powder Coat at PRISMATIC Powder
and have the Bottom Metal done this way.............

Any thoughts other than NO ??????

100% Fred Ballard.

Sadly Goathill screwed me also. Nobody should've ever got screwed again by Goathill. Plenty of info here about it....Joe

Only thing about Fred is that it will take a long time if you are having plating done.
This December will be a year since I sent mine to him.
I expect to get an email any day now that it’s on its way. ( fingers crossed)

I would be concerned about the effects of the bake temp of powdercoating on the internal diaphram.

If a person were careful and plugged the openings well, I see no reason why you could not zinc plate with a gold dichromate finish just the bottom without disassembly. You may have to build a jig to hold it perpendicular to the zinc bath. Caswell can set you up with a kit.
Gas cap example:

The coated item is then oven-cured at temperatures around 350 to 400°F (176.6 to 204.4°C). The high heat melts the powder, creating an even, smooth coating.

I concur Bad Idea given the soft goods internal to a Fuel Pump.

Now the Plating Idea would possibly be a easier route, think about it.
It is Already Brite (Clear) silver Zinc, All it would need is the Dichromate post treatment, that would not require rectifier hook up just a Dunk and Dip and Rinse.
Nasty Stuff.
My Plater source (Edmonds-Everett Guy doing Planes stuff after all he is kind of Slow right at the moment *Strike effects) would tell me to take a Hike and Jump off a cliff when bringing him such a "Risky" item (To Him).

Go Get a Fluorescence Yellow Highlighter from Office Maz and Do a Test Swipe, that Might Yellow it up enough- Backyard Hack maybe, You Just Never know.

The Eastwood Paints might be able to be misted on over it to trick some, but usually I DO NOT bother with Poof Can plating.

I was a Caswell user 20 years ago but found at time commercial platers WILL help out, but thier moods change with the times.

I had my GOAT HILL incorrectly plated 40726 AC Pump plated with Yellow Zinc on the Steel Fuel Section...............

Now Im asking for a conclusion on how best to refinish the cast Aluminum Portion....

Glass Bead and Spray with Clear ???

OR What's Your "Secret"

Bottom Pic is Service Replacement that Id like to replicate the "LOOK"

CamarosRus 06-12-2025 04:38 AM

On the above pictured pump , I glassbeaded the cast aluminum "top" section so its
clean but I dont like the look.........

I dont have a can of Eastwood/Seymour AlumiBlast .....Any thoughts on
what aeresol I could mist on the glassbeaed aluminum to make it look
"good"

This pump cosmetic restoration has turned into a ugly project.........but
I'd still like to have the date coded pump on my 70 Z28 .............
