I've heard that some states will allow you to register with old plates if the number isn't taken.

Yes but also the plate must have a clear/free title.

Michigan is like that but only on vehicles considered historic, not just any old car. I am not sure, think it has to be 25 yrs or older to qualify as historic vehicle and must not be used for daily transportation, only for parades and special events, e.g. cars shows. Failure to comply will result if the historic plate being canceled.

The plate issue year must match the model year of the car and the plate must not be currently registered on another vehicle. Same price as the historic plate and you must apply for it. Can't walk into DMV and walk out that day register. Need a special form and a photocopy of the compete plate. Should get the sticker in about 2-4 weeks. Good for 5-10 yrs.

I did that with my 1964 Impala. I found a mint plate a lady had hanging in her garage. Plate was last used in 1966.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. The way I understand Illinois law, you can run a vintage plate if the car is registered as an Antique vehicle. The State issues an Antique plate but you have the option to display the vintage plate on the car as long as the correct, and current Antique plate remains in the vehicle. Seems strange but I asked a State Trooper and he verified it.

Antique plates are $6 per year; renewable every five years. If you register a car this year, you pay a pro-rated fee to carry you to Dec 31, 2004. All Antique plates renew at that time. (Dec 31, 1999, 2004, 2009, etc.)

In Az you are allowed to register the old plates as long as they are for the year of the car and the number does not show up in their database search. I found a 68 Az plate for my Camaro and registered it. It was just a walk in/walk out same day deal. [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif[/img]

Same in Texas, my cars all run a never issued plate that matches the year of the car.

I found in California that if the old title has the plates listed, they're verified to be in good shape, and all the necessary paperwork the DMV requires is filled out you can use the plates. I've had this done for my '67 when I bought it earlier this year.
