The 403 is on a '69 Z-28 and the 383 is a universal GM replacement, I believe.

The 421 bell is '63 only. All Corvette and small block passenger car. Even though it's a one year only piece, they typically sell for $20-$50.

I think the '421 has a smaller hole for the trans front bearing retainer. Won't fit most 4-speeds.

I bid on several "403" bellhousings on Ebay and they all went for around 100.00, then I bought one at a swap meet for 20 bucks. I guess I'ts how brave you are and how cheap you can get them for. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: bellhousing casting #'s

John,
The 421 does have the small hole for the front bearing collar. The '63 Borg-Warner T10-D1 case used a smaller front bearing. When the first Muncies were placed in production in April '63, they also had the small bearing and retainer. If a 409 was ordered in a passenger car in '63 the same 553 open bottom bell was used (as in '61 & '62). The trans was basically the same, with the small front bearing, but had a different front collar with the same bolt circle, but a larger outter diameter to fit the bigger hole in the bell.
In '63, you could take a small block T-10 or Muncie, swap the front bearing retainer for the larger version and use the 553 bell if desired. You could also take a '63 409 trans and swap to the smaller (alum) retainer and use the 421 bell.

Verne.
