Re: Help , how to ID a trans?
There might still be a steel tag bolted to the trans--'69 --M21--3946798( XD or XF) M22--3950318(X1)

Re: Help , how to ID a trans?
There will also be a code stamped in the case. Ending in A=2.54, B=2.20, C=2.20~M22.
It should look like this Stamping |
Re: Help , how to ID a trans?
ok, looked at trans. the metal tag reads 3981710wy
tailshaft reads 3978764- side cover 395264 main case 3925661 and their was another stamping that read 555310 so far i believe this to be a 70-71 trans also a aluminum case the tail shaft is 12" long if that helps still don't know if its m21-m22 or whatever thanks! |
Re: Help , how to ID a trans?
If that wy is really a wj, then it could be a '72 M22....
Up to '70 the M22 had fine splines on the output shaft---After '71 they all changed to fine splines on the output shaft----The '71/'72 M-22 had no id rings on the output shaft ---take off tailshaft housing---Or see if you find John Brown's recommendation--the letter C after the numbers would designate M22... |

Re: Help , how to ID a trans?
A real M-22 would be a steal at 800.00 bucks.

Re: Help , how to ID a trans?
Check out this site it has some information that will help
http://www.gearheadracing.com/Refere...sID/muncie.htm M22 has a different gear cut than a m20 or m21,the m22 gear cut is more straight than angled, which helped it to shift into gear easier, but also made it more noiser, also a m22 is a more stronger trans than a m20 or m21.Some m21's used the same cases and input shafts as a m22 also.A couple of tale tale signs to look for is. 1. All m22 trans has the drain boss drilled and tapped and a plug installed 2. All m22 trans had NO ring grooves around the input shaft. 3.. The way to really tell for sure is pull the side cover and look at the cut of the gears! That is the best way to tell and if you are buying a trans you need to pull the side cover anyway to make sure it is not damaged or worn really bad! Prices range from around $800.00 and up to $$$$! Depending on date of trans and it's condition.I have seen some M22's go for as much as $2500.00.Of course if you was to happen to run up on a NOS there is no telling what it would bring. Hope this helps Bobby Dodson |
