Decoding Vin Number 1970 Nova

Does anyone know what defines an actual "SS" in the VIN number?

Nothing does in a '70 model. If it starts out 11427, it's a two door V8. From there, you need to have paperwork or the factory original drivetrain with the VIN stamp. If the drivetrain is missing, all you've got are clues and speculation.

There are several things to look for, but the best thing is to have the original engine.

There is no way to decode the vin or data plate as a SS on a 70 nova. You will need some paper work to prove it. Check for the must haves. Power disc brakes and 12 bolt rear. Matching numbers big block or 350/300. Earl

While not an absolute, most 70 SS cars have welded on rear swaybar hangers. The only non SS novas to have them were Yenko deuces. That's usually the first place I look.
