Opinion on Muncie rebuild
I'm looking for opinions on my Muncie transmission that I need to rebuild. The original one is gone but I have a maincase dated P8T21 for my 01C built car. The problem is that it has another VIN on it, 38M232801. This is stamped on the driver's side of the maincase.
Should I worry about welding over this and refinishing it (basically get rid of it)? I will not restamp it, just want to get opinions on this before I have the tranny rebuilt. Thanks. |
Re: Opinion on Muncie rebuild
I would never remove a partial VIN from an engineblock or transmission. Those parts could be reunited with the car they left the factory in, in the future.

Re: Opinion on Muncie rebuild
I have tried welding over castings in the past and it is usually a crapshoot. Most of the time the weld has pits and or porosity after it is machined off and sometimes there is a finish difference between the two alloys that stands out. I would not touch it.
Sometimes unstamped Muncie housings come up on Ebay from time to time. Paul |

I'm not an Olds man,but that's a 1968 Oldsmobile VIN derivative, built in Lansing,Michigan-38M232801 Try finding the car/owner today using the last 6 digits in a search. It may buy you a new replacement trans.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |

Don't change anything. Don't mess it up. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif You already know it is not correct for your application so why change anything. Just put it together and use it! JMO Sam
