Shipping muscle car sheet metal.
 

How have you guys shipped muscle car sheet metal? Specifically I'm talking about shipping inner fenders, but generally speaking, what outfit, what kind of rates to expect?

Depending on the size of the object and location,I would highly recommend Greyhound buslines.
When UPS,FedEx& USPS tell me it is oversized and difficult and extra fees,blah blah blah..I call GreyHound.
If the sender lives near a GreyHound Depot,and you live near one too,it really is a great alternative.
Greyhound doesn't advertise as heavily as other companies,so it really is one of the best kept secrets when shipping a LARGE item.
I've had a Cowl hood,Chevelle doors,dashboard,a Bumper,gaspump as well as a 7 foot tall gas station island light post,all sent to me for near 1/3rd of what I was quoted from others,but it does take more time,average 10-15 days to reach you,depending on destination.
If there's room on the Bus belly coming near you,they'll do it,and yes insurance is available,but I've not needed it in the past,as I paid the sender well to reinforce the shipping container.Sometimes they have to ship it through intra connecting buses too,not solely one bus,so get the tracking no.

greyhound hands down, I have shipped several large pieces,I shipped a pair of nos 69 gto fenders to texas from michigan in a box the size of a refridgerator for 170.00, I just shipped 4 steel wheels 15x8s from michigan to long island in 2 seperate boxes, 90.00 insured for 500.00, they got there in 3 days. never any damage like ups, they are the worst in my book for damaged goods,

I received two outer wheel houses shipped via UPS. The box was damaged and the wheel houses were crushed beyond repair. It took two months to get my money from UPS.

Wow, Rick, I'm surprised you were able to send a hood. Their website indicates size limits of 30 inches X 47 inches X 82 inches.

I have also used Greyhound to ship the big stuff, and agree that they're great for that purpose. Just keep in mind that their standard shipping consists of shipping your item on a "space available" basis. If there's no room on a particular bus, your package gets bumped to a later one. Also, there are different size buses, and the smaller ones may not be able to handle a very large package, so that may cause a delay as well. I just shipped a pair of fenders from WA to MI, and it took nearly 3 weeks. Their tracking system is also not that sophisticated. I was only able to find out that the package I shipped was "in transit" when I inquired.

All in all, I've been happy with using them and will continue to do so. You do give up some efficiency and sophistication, but that's worth the tradeoff for getting your stuff to arrive unharmed.

The Cowl hood was my Litmus test with GreyHound.
It measured up at roughly 60"X 72".It was old & used and not really that valuable,at that time it was shipped to me.
It was coming from Frankfort,Kentucky,and they had a bus coming to Aurora Il.They said it exceeded their size limit,so no insurance was possible.But they did have plenty of belly room as there was only a handful of passengers on that particular bus.
I agreed to there terms as stated and 2 weeks later didn't find any damage caused during shipping.

That makes sense. They seem to be lenient with their size/weight limits. I know I was over by 5 pounds on one of my shipments, and they let it slide.
