NCIB Reports - What Exactly Is One???

What exactly is a NCIB report? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

I know that they can tell you who the original dealer was but to they detail ownership history? Is there any way for a non law enforcement person to get a hold of one? Is it easy for a policeman to get one? Is there no service that can be used to obtain one?

Appreciate the education!!!

It is for law enforcement use only, not available to the general public. They use the original assembly plant archive records for verifying if a VIN is real or not. These records were given to NICB from each plant back in the day, on an annual basis. Some plants did not forward the records so the database can be incomplete at times. They have records relating to all vehicles ever shipped by VIN back to about the year 1900. These record only give the "shipped to" dealer code.

This would be a boon to the collector hobby if it was available to the general public, even for a fee. Think of it: Gee, now I have paperwork to verify my car was originally delivered to a certain dealership in Canonsburg, PA, or Long Island, NY.

But, alas NICB does not permit the use for other purposes outside of law enforcement. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Steve,
A friend of mine (now retired) was in charge of national auto theft recovery, based near Chicago, and had access to the basement files at the NICB. HE told me that the records were "complete" back through '63, had "most" of '62 and "little" of '61. From there on back, there wasn't much at all, if anything. Since he was able to visit the files in person, he was able to look up the VIN of my '62 and record the dealer information for me. It was too risky to leave with a copy. And that was many years ago.

Up until about five years ago, a fellow advertised this service for a $100 fee. I used him twice and the reports were very accurate. He no longer advertises in Hemmings and I haven't been able to get hold of him.

Looks like they are hiring. Pay is not bad either. If I had a background in that area I would apply.

There still has to be someone able to run NCIB checks out there would love to run one on 2 cars my 1970 Nickey converted 427 Nova to prove where it was sold new since the NCIB check ran 2 years ago showed it was sold in Canada and Canada has no record of the car. Also on a 1968 Yenko Camaro 396/375 car that never got converted to 427 one of 6 non converted cars that got ordered with special COPO 9737 option. Let me know if anyone still does these checks don't need owners names since I have all owners names except first one which dealers are more important.
