I remember when they used these and there were boxes full of these bags of rivets beside the line. We used to make up the little punches that went down inside the rivet to spread the crown.

Keith some years back a former Gm employee gave me a bag of the original grill rivets for my 66 impala. In the bag was a rod about 4 inches long 3/8 round stock and stepped down at the end. I could never see how I would use it for the grill rivets but now hearing your story I bet it was a punch for these.
