Should a car stand on it's own merit?
 

A recent thread has made me realize that there are two camps in the collector car hobby: Those who believe that a car should stand on it's own merit and it's history can be researched and or published and those who think if it's not your car, it's none of your damn business.

Personally I fall under the former category as I know my cars have a past and other people who have owned them have just as much right to talk about "the old car" as myself.

As someone who is constantly searching for history on my car(s), I would like nothing better than for someone to come out and publicly state what they know or remember about it. I figure it would only help document my car.

Any thoughts?

I can't imagine someone having a problem with that unless they were trying to serve up some ALPO diguised as prime rib.

I would love for someone to find out exactly why the son of the original owner of my car did what he did and why!! If I thought it really would make a difference today I would give his name and street address and year he was there to try to find out.

When I first got my 69 RS/Z, it was in rough shape. Yes it had rust but for some reason it had bondo in the strangest places like the ridge of the roof and the top of one of the quarters when everything else around it was okay. It was like something fell on to the top of the car. Well a few years later, I manage to talk to the owner of it in the early 1980's who told me that the car was in a tornado and had cinder blocks fall on it. I thought that was fantastic news because it established something unique about it and I also understood a bit more about it. I would have been just as happy had I found this out by reading a newspaper.

The true question is if you would divulge that the car was in a tornado sometime in its early life... and evidence of a repair was found but corrected to a factory like end result.

Sure I would. The buyer (or someone who sees the car in person)can judge for himself if the repair was good or not.

If I was to buy a finished car, I would rather know the cars complete chronological history backed by previous owners than a car with limited history except for a GM of Canada doc.

My wife chuckles when I'm selling a car. She says that it sounds more like I'm trying to talk the guy out of the car than selling it to him. If there is anything wrong or incorrect, the buyer is going to know to the best of my knowledge. Saying that poor guys don't have a right to have input is a cop out. I bet there are a lot of rich guys that got burned because some poor guy wasn't there to point out problems. If people have problems with your car, explain it. If you can't, you have a problem. The price will be governed accordingly, unless you are able to scam someone. The higher the price, the closer the scrutiny. Get used to it. There are a lot of sharp eyed people out there.
