68 Impala Instrument Cluster Install

Hopefully somebody has done this. Do you have to change the dash wiring harness when you a replace a dummy light instrument cluster with one that has the gauge/tach option? I know I will have to use different senders.

Thanks

Yes you do have to change the harness when converting to gauges.

I was able to change the Dummy harness from idiot to gauge
harness in a 70 Chevelle for my friend.I got the info from
The National Chevelle Association club magazine back quite a few years ago. Then there were no after market harnesses
for the gauge package.

Re: 68 Impala Instrument Cluster Install

So the cluster that I got had the pigtail for the dash harness still intalled in it. I matched all the wires to the dummy light harness and changed the coolent temp sensor, the oil guage is mechanical. Everything works. Except for the tach. Does anyone know how the tach gets it's signal? There are two wires left over from the guage harness. Solid black and black with a white stripe. I know I need to run a wire to the coil. Is one of these the wire I need to run?

Thanks
