I'm pretty sure that broached surface is machined in the same operation as the surface where the head gasket is supposed to seal to the block.....can you imagine a gasket trying to seal against that...

69 396/325 T400 Air Cleaner

Air cleaner assembly for a 1969 Chevelle (possibly other models too??) with 325hp 396 and automatic transmission. These were often discarded back in the day for the 'cooler looking' open element type...
