In a single day in July 1979, Tropical Storm Claudette dropped a whopping 43 inches of rain on the small Texas town of Alvin, just south of Houston. Alvin held the record for the most rainfall in the United States in 24 hours—until 2018. In April of that year, a rain gauge in the Hawaiian town of Hanalei recorded 49.69 inches of rainfall in one day
