Jay Black (extreme left) of Jay & The Americans died today.
One of my favorite all time 1960s R & R groups. I met Jay when we went to one of his concerts on L.I. My business partner's brother was his lawyer and arranged for us to go back stage after the concert for the "wrap" party. It's a weird feeling shaking hands and spending some time with one of your lifetime idols.
His real name was David Blatt and joined Jay & The Americans after their first song: She Cried in 1962. He changed his name to Jay Black as the first lead singer's name was John “Jay” Traynor.
Here is the song that got him the nickname "The Voice."
