Because it was. An average one income household could pay the mortgage, pay for a new car, all utilities, insurance, food, and take the family on vacation once in a while.

Today, it takes two average incomes per household just to make ends meet. Rents are as high as a mortgage payment now, and back then it didn't take 72 months to pay off a new vehicle.

There's whole lot of examples as to why it was easier in the 60s.
