You must have been charged for Express Mail. Here are the rates for 6 1/2 pounds from Los Angeles to New York City, quoted from USPS.com.
Express MailŪ (Overnight to most areas) $36.90
Priority MailŪ (2-3 days) 18.30
Parcel PostŪ (Additional Fees May Apply) 7 days 12.88
