The confusion was probably at the assembly plant. A friend knows of at least one early L78 that received a blacked out tail pan sometime after the bumper was on and trunk weather strip installed.

John your car sure appears to be original paint and it just slipped through without anyone catching it. Not common, but understandable for an early L78.
