Day 2 Drag Racing
This should probably be in the race section, but since I've got a bit of a "day 2" look going with my car, I figured I'd post it here.
I had my Chevy II at a test and tune session on Saturday. First time out with the 355 I built 2 years ago. It's just a very mild street engine. Drivetrain is a M20 with 3.36 rear gears. I was launching it easy so the 60 ft suffered and I did not powershift. 12.98 @ 108 mph. With that kind of mph, I'd say it should be easy mid-12s if I stop worrying about hurting it and run it a little harder. |

Re: Day 2 Drag Racing
That's impressive! I'd say mid 12's are definitely in range - I'd think easily if you threw more gear at it.

Re: Day 2 Drag Racing
That is a very good running Chevy II. Easy a mid to low 12's car with just some minor tuning I bet.

Re: Day 2 Drag Racing
Don't worry about ET. Your car looks and runs super just the way it is. Trust me when I tell you this: the more you concentrate on 1/4 mile times, the more drivability you will take out of your car. Been there and done it. Unless you are addicted to racing (as I was and at times am now), just have some fun and enjoy yourself with the car. Fine tune it and tweak where you can, then drive it. Looks great and any 12 second street car should be a blast to drive.

Re: Day 2 Drag Racing
Geezz -- does that bring back memories. Back in the late 70's early 80's I had a 64 Nova wagon with 355 and 4 gear. I cannot remember what gear it had, but it was a posi. There were a number of Z-28 and Mustang drivers that probably remain surprised to this day an old fart in a Nova wagon put it to them ... that thing would hook. TAZ

Re: Day 2 Drag Racing
Thanks, guys. While it might run better with more gear, I'm not going to change a thing. It primarily a street car. On a 350 mile roundtrip road trip to Pittsburgh this summer, I was getting a real 19 mpg running 70 mph at 3200 rpm across the hills of Pennsylvania. More gear would definitely hurt gas mileage and make long road trips a bit uncomfortable.
I'm pretty happy with a car that will run 108 in the 1/4 and still manage 19 mpg with no OD. The engine is built off of a '69 L65 block. It's a very simple 355 combo using mostly GM parts (062 vortec heads, GMPP low rise EGR dual plane manifold, etc). |

Re: Day 2 Drag Racing
My small block ran a best of 12.65 at just 105mph, so I would say mid 12s should be possible. Would you consider a 3.42 or 3.55 gear? What are your 60 and 1/8 times?
