Default 2 Piece Scattershield What Vintage?

I recently picked up this 2 piece scattershield from a long time drag racer. He told me it was new and looked to be at first glance. When I got it home I noticed it has been nicely repainted and has witness marked around the mounting holes that show it has been installed. Now I am wondering how old it is. From what I have read, companies stopped making these in the 70's. He told me it was a Lakewood but he also said it was new so I don't know what to believe. It came with a 1971 dated 1050 Dominator so maybe around that time?

Thanks,

Jason

Lakewood 1971 catalog has it listed there. I also have one of these two piece shields...

Mark,

Excellent. That would make sense with the 71 Dominator.

Mark,

It is a 4575. I am just listing it in the classifieds now. I will give you first shot at it.

Lakewood started with the one piece hydroformed housings in 1968/69, if I'm not mistaken. I seem to recall articles on Grump's cars showing changeover to the one piece on his '68 car, but I'm not sure if they were available retail yet. I think they produced these two piece shields for several more years. Seems like people were evaluating more weight / perhaps less structural integrity but easy access of the two piece vs the lighter, stronger less accessible one piece, which clearly won out in the end. Running the same shield as the one pictured in my COPO.

I think you are pretty good on the time frame Jeff. Grump used to get stuff somewhat earlier than most. He was a test bed sort-a-speak. I believe the one piece was also cheaper to make. Seems to, that these sanctioning bodies of drag racing approve new things that the manufacturer and car lobbyists push. That is a real nice bell housing.

I had one of those in my Chevelle when it had the 427 and muncie. I wish I hadn't let it go when I sold them. Had to go back with the one piece. I now have to take the header loose if I need to remove the starter and have to pull the engine up on the right side to get the header off. With the two piece, I just had to remove the bottom cover.
