You have to be careful buying vintage signs. There are as many fake signs on ebay (being sold as real vintage) as there are fake 69 Z/28's. There is a huge influx of very well made fake sign from India. Some are aged, some have bullet holes, etc. None are absolutely perfect fakes... yet. But, just as with trim tags, they will get better. Another hobby shot to hell.

I've been collecting oil and gas (Petroliana) items for some time now, and have some close friends who've been into this hobby for 30+ years. One thing we have all learned well is how to spot the fakes and what to stay away from. Like any hobby, there are those who will misrepresent to take advantage of another, and there are many good folks with great collections of rare originals. One such auction coming up with some fantastic original signs is the Mecum WALWORTH 2016 OCT 20-22. Killer rare signs, gasoline globes, oil cans, and vintage road signs that cover the gambit. This one is chalk full of heavy hitter items and may be a bit of an eye opener for entry level collectors.

I have stayed away from signs just because I DON'T know how to tell a real from a fake, and at this point in my life, probably won't learn.
I am hoping to acquire a few Sinclair pieces, but nothing high dollar. However, I am not interested in any repop stuff. And, I have a very nice set of Alemite Cabinets with work bench that will get restored in Sinclair colors (came out of a Sinclair station in MO). I would consider purchasing a few more small Alemite pieces. Maybe you can tell me Earl: This guy on Ebay has ELEVEN big "A" Alemite two sided signs for sale. I am trying to figure out how a guy comes up with 11 of these. I could see if he ran across a stash of 11 unused ones, but all of these are aged about the same. Not slamming the seller, cuz as I said, I can't tell original from fake. Are these good? Alemite "A" signs.

Lynn,
Not the most desirable pieces but they do look real. I think those are painted tin though and not porcelain as he has stated. It also appears that the seller is an antique dealer so he may have bought up those pieces from an old bulk dealer or a collector. I don't value them to highly as condition is very poor. Just my opinion? It's like anything though, I'd suggest one buys quality not quantity.

I spoke to Dana Mecum today about this auction. He finally got a chance to see the stuff now that they have it all on dislay. He said this will be a auction remembered for years. Some truly amazing stuff. He mentioned he had only auctioned and seen just a few Oilzum items over the years. I looked on this auction and there are over 50 Oilzum listings. This might be something that changes the market. Pretty cool stuff and I think it is all from one collector.

Many collectors have been liquidating their real metal sign collections.India is to blame for all the fake signs that hit the market recently,so much so that it's driving the prices of the real ones down. Many commissioned low cost labor overseas manufacturers to replicate signs for them,(even the holy grail once never thought about doing porcelains),to take advantage of the sign boom lately.
Too many sellers are bogus on eBay with their claims of originality. One guy even makes his own, beats em up with a chain, then lets em soak in pigs**t for a month or so and calls em "barnfinds". Fortunately many people who spot the fakes,or know people who are doing the fakes, share the details with others across the net. Newbie buyers should do some serious homework before laying down some serious cash for anything like this today. |

I've been watching the bids, and seeing some unusually high prices being realized @ Mecum so far just in the first 2 days.
*$3400 + for a Shell one gallon can. *$400 + for an empty Texaco crate. *$34,000 + for Dick Bennett's old Mohawk Gasoline paddle sign...SMH *$120,000.00 for A Mileage Maker sign. All of these prices are beyond the norm. |
