Default 1966 Baldwin Corvair

A 1966 Corvair Corsa was ordered new in July, `66 by a mechanic for Baldwin Chev. The car was stripped and screwed together as a racer with all the goodies then available. The car is now restored to the original livery found when it was media blasted. I have attempted over the last few years to tack down any leeds on this owner/mechanic. Anyone in SCCA at the time (perhaps a tech inspector) could be very helpful in my attempts to trace the history of this car. The SCCA logbook and most of the records in the glove box were reduced to garbage by mice. Oil City carwash tokens, and matchbook covers from Ballerose Diner on Jamaica Ave. and Baldwin are all that survive from the defroster vent tubes. Any recollections of the car would be helpful. I am at a dead-end living on the left coast in Oregon. Thanks, Bob

PS. The mechanic was described as a very tall, lean and lanky fellow with dark hair who worked for Baldwin but lived in New Jersey.

Remember a car # was the only one allowed in that region so as not to confuse another car in the same race group that were on the track at the same time. Mine was 77 and when ever I went to out of region tracks I would have to change it to 17 or 71 or some # not in use at that time.

With that knowledge you should contact the local SCCA oficials in your area and they could look up the correct officials in the NY area for you. I would also place a call to the SCCA national offices and perhaps that could yield a lead for you.

You would be suprised on how many people that raced back in that time period still have pictures and memories of some of the cars that they raced against. I know I still have a lot of my old grid sheets from the late 70's and early 80's.

Heck I may have even raced against that car at one time way back when. It should have been in D/P class back then.

Good luck with your search
