Default Block Stamping

Just found an original 396/375 hp block one day off of my original motor for my 69 L78 Camaro. Check out the VIN stamping. Looks like the line worker mis-stamped then re-stamped the VIN. This one is out of a 69 Nova with last 6 digits of 487960. I thought the line workers were stamping the VIN down by the oil filter. It must have been a pain to remove the alternator every time.

Do you think it was possible they used a special holder with a long shank to reach behind the alternator? Interesting.

I wonder if this is out of any members car?

Paul

Nice reference....cool how different the 1 & 9 can look with a heavier hit on their end of the same gang stamp. .

Looks like it was so heavy on the one that the stamp bottomed out... see where around the one it is perfectly smooth... like the flat of the stamp burnished the block.

I have never seen a VIN stamp by the oil filter on a Nova big block...perhaps it was just a Camaro or Chevelle practice. Maybe someone out there has a BB Nova with VIN stamp near oil filter, if so please share some info.

Never seen one either, all BB and SB Nova's that I have seen have the stamps on the pad.
