Default Crane Cams points conversion

Anyone put any time on one of these units (XR-i)? Besides the rev limiter, what makes this unit better than the other brands?

Thanks!

Joe

I put one in over the summer. I wanted the rev limiter as protection at the track. Really worked well for me.. I haven't run with a Petronix ignition but I gather they are pretty similiar. If you do get one you best get the matching Crane coil. Its a drop in for the 293 OEM coil..

The shop that did the points conversion for my big block Nova only uses the Pertronics as he said the inherent design of the Crane doesn't allow for any wear in the bushings of the original distributor and the timing could bounce around. I would have loved to have the rev limiter but thought I should heed the voice of experience.

I have a remanufactured distributor that I could use, so the worn bearings shouldn't be a problem.

This distibutor is for a 455 olds, but not necessarily the correct one for my W30 4 speed. Think it's for a 71 442 auto.

What else would I need to do to the distributor? What is really different between one distributor part number and another?

How much does it cost to get an original re-built?

Joe

Why is the Crane coil a must..??? I have this set up on my 68 BB car and still have the stock coil....does the Crane coil make it work better..??

Per Crane, it is recommended with the ignition system. Also higher energy than an OEM coil. Don't think there is a problem running the original coil. Pete Gerling recommended the set up to me. If you have seen him run his Yenko at the track... well nuff said..

I used the crane system for about 6 months with a stock coil. I never raced the car, but it ran OK. I switched back to the single point setup.

Darren, et al: be weary of the rev limiter on the Crane unit, word in the Pure Stock circles from dyno testing is that they start coming in quite a bit earlier than where you set them. Not like an MSD soft touch, which starts pulling back at a set #...

I'll keep and eye on that. When I installed mine I set it for 4500 to test and it hit there every time. Thanks for the heads up Rob...
