Both are possible.
There is no one way only answer. It depended on the Plant,as well as time produced there. |

I have a 70 ls6 engine that is stamped on the pad upside down and by the filter,it was from the kansas plant.

I only have the engine, the engine is at my shop,i think the date code is march of 70.The vin is upside down on the pad and the digits are larger than normal. The vin over by the filter is the correct size. The short block was discovered in a garage in kansas where the car was built. The engine was going to be in a chevy truck project, guy lost interest and the fellow that i purchased it from bought it and realized what he had and marked it up and sold it to me.Im not an expert on restamps but this looks solid and they would have no reason to retamp it since it was an engine only.I only discovered the vin by the filter by accident.
