Default 69 GTO Conv, missing trim tag

Hey guys, just wanted to get your thoughts on something.

Looking at a 69 GTO convertible, 350hp automatic car. Needs full resto, but a pretty good car. It's all there, pretty straight, and minimal rust. 24267 VIN. Has a YS block (non vin matching, 0304494 YS), but the heads (62) and intake (234) match each other as late Nov 68. XH rear axle (3.55 posi). Carb is wrong.

But.... the trim tag is missing. The owner may have it, we dont know just yet. The VIN tag doesnt appear to have been swapped at any time, its R123xxx. Just a guess, but compared to my R170xxx car (05A), I would think that puts the car in the beginning of the year, which leads me to think that maybe the heads and intake are original to the car.

So my question is how big of an effect will the (possibly) missing trim tag have on it? I know its not a good thing, but I'm wondering if the availability of PHS offsets it any (compared to the other makes)? Also, would like your opinions on what you think the car's worth is, as it sits (pic below).

Still not sure if the owner removed it, or if it was stolen. The owner was not around, his friend showed us the car. Should know more tomorrow. If stolen, I certainly leave the car without one at all.

Thanks in advance,
dave

PHS is all the difference in the world...it will tell the world what the car really is...missing tag sucks but at least you will know its real.

a guy on on an Oldsmobile board just bought a 69 GTO ragtop for $200 out of a guy's front yard near Chicago.
sold it the same week on ebay for 5 grand.it looked a little better than the one youre looking at,but was still rough.

if you get the PHS on the car I think you can get a new trim tag made for it.I remember ads in Hemmings.Tom

------I agree. If you have the PHS paperwork and the car appears as it is on that paperwork I think a re-pop tag would be OK. We all know you can pick the tags but in this case, agreeing that you would divulge the info upon resale, I think it would be acceptable.........Bill S

I feel like Im in the Twilight Zone here. Repop tags getting an "OK" on this site (in this case).

Thanks for the input, guys. Ive built several Pontiacs, just hadnt come across a missing tag on one, and didnt know the PHS effect on that.

The owner says he's 95% sure he has the tag, so at least it wasnt stolen off the car. Looks like it was originally Limelight Green, and since its not a RA or block #s car, it looks like we'll choose our own color on it (if the deal goes through).

In this case, replacing the tag with an exact repro of the original tag would be deemed OK as you have the PHS docs to prove the authenticity of the car, and you are upfront with a prospective purchaser if you ever sell it. It's the guys that add/delete/create new cars that's the problem.

Update:

The guy selling the conv flaked on us. I say that, since he was reluctant while we had cash in hand, and will "get back with us in a few weeks". Oh, well.

A couple days ago, a 69 Judge, Carousel Red, 4spd, hideway car "found" us. Picked it up instead.

Similar condition, similar situation. Original block is gone, as well as the trim tag. Has paper, some signed by Wangers (whatever thats worth). Must be a magnet to missing tag GTOs, considering we haven't even been looking for these cars.

So I might be looking for some RAIII parts (and other 69 GTO parts) if anyone around here has any for sale. Might need WS block, 273 carb, 952 dist. Came with RA ex mans, dated May 8 and 14 of 70. Will use them, unless someone would be interested in a trade.
