Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (PHNSY) along with Honolulu Community College (HCC) provides opportunities for selected trainees to work alongside journeymen, receive trade theory training and work toward a degree in Applied Trades at Honolulu Community College.

This program, known as the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard's "Apprentice Program", is a four-year work/study program which prepares students for careers in various industrial trades. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are normally offered permanent positions in the PHNSY. Program graduates may be noncompetitively promoted to the journeyman-level.

PHNSY is the Navy's Regional Center for the maintenance and repair of naval ships in the Hawaii region and the largest repair facility between the West Coast and the Far East. It employs more than 4,000 civilian employees and military personnel and is the largest industrial employer in the State.
