Default tach question (sun 8K greenline)

I just picked up a really nice tach that came off a 67 car, today. Its a sun greenline 8K tach. My 67 hemi 'had' one mounted on top of the dash when it was day2 new, for drag racing. I jumped at this one, cause of what it came off of 'a 67'.

So did I get the right vintage for a day 2 tach for my car?

And does it really not need a sender like the guy said? If its period wrong, I will resell it. It was a $100 gamble.

As a rule of thumb, the 7k and 9k tachs typically needed the black box while the 8k and 10k did not. Certainly they non sender tachs were available in 1969. Possibly 1968, but I don't think there was a non-sender tach out in 1967.

thanks! Sounds like it may be too new for a 67 use. I sat it on top of the dash, and does look cool. I noticed the previous two holes in the dash that were there for mounting do not line up with this tach. Looks like a much larger pad imprint than the sun tach base.

getting there...(sure do like the way it looks though).

Personally, I would run the tach. You'll probably find more of the green line 7-9k tach than you will blue line. They just seemed to make more of the green in the earlier years. Most would never know the difference and the black boxes are rather large. I think the later tachs without the sender are worth more FWIW.

You can have it restored to work without a sender...

I too am searching for an old school looking tach, and ran across an article in Auto Restorer Magazine (April 2010) where they are remaking the SST802R tachs (among others). They are sold through the big catalog parts companies for ~$150, and have modern internals that don't require the sending unit. What is the consensus on going this route?

I've looked at those ever since I first heard about them. Finally had an opportunity to see one in action a couple of weeks ago, but it was the FZ88R model. Gotta say I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. The needle was smooth and the response was quick. I'm probably gonna pop for one soon.
