I recently met a gentlemen that claims he has a 68 429 SCJ motor complete from air cleaner to oil pan sitting in the corner of the garage he's looking to sell. First I was wondering where could I find the numbers on this motor to verify it is what he says it is. Would there be anything special to look for standing there looking at the motor. Claims the motor has less then 20,000 miles on it. Lastly, what's the motor worth, he's asking $5000. I'm not a ford guy so I would be simply buying to resell to get this beast to someone that could possibly put it in there Super Cobra jet body. Any info would be greatly appreciated and thanks.
Mike

Im no Ford guy but other than the Boss 429 which debuted in 1969, they weren't any other 429s til 1971. It would be a 428.

Don't forget 429's were the std motor in 68-73 Thunderbird so fairly common really.
Whether 428 or 429, didn't all Super CJ's have remote oil coolers so an oil filter on the engine a good indicator it's not a SCJ? I'm no Ford guy either but learned the basics working at the boneyard back in the day, especially that you don't want to get stuck w/ a 351/400 M-motor so best confirm all you can before $ spent! Count the valve cover bolts also grab any casting/stamping info you can including engine tag at front also carb and distrib #'s. Also look carefully at the crank output end and pilot bushing or a deep provision for one as lack of and large hole for torque converter hub indicates auto etc. Best of luck delving into the dark side! Some people confuse any 429 for a CJ.
Some people confuse a CJ for an SCJ. There was no SCJ in 1968, so it's gotta be one of the two above. It's easy to transpose a number for a year as well. |

Were the 428 and 429 SCJ engines factory solid lifter? Or was only the 429 SCJ?
