Looking for a 1968 Nova with the L79 327/325hp motor. Prefer a documented car but will consider all. Project or restored/unrestored. Doesn't matter. Having a hard time finding one. Thanks.

If you want someone to take that ratty old 67 race car off your hands to make room for the Nova, let me know.

That is not surprising, most of us Nova guys have never seen one either. The '68 L79 Nova is an oft discussed topic on the Nova board, we've generally concluded that they are usually not Super Sports - which may make the discovery of one even more difficult. The L79 325HP version was not the only 327 available in the '68 Nova. The L30 275HP version was also an option, but not in a Super Sport, I have been chasing an L30 '68 Nova for a few years now without any luck.
bbdon is one of the best resources on these rare cars, and he has a good selection of vintage road tests. That is a good place to start.

Dream on, Denis. Get your own race car!
Thanks for the message, Marlin. I am pretty familiar with the cars. A friend of mine used to own one in the late '70s. I looked up the production numbers back then and knew the car was fairly rare but never made a move to buy it from him. Next thing I knew, it was gone and I've been kicking myself ever since. I have heard there is a black one in the Milwaukee area. That's all I know. Have never seen pictures and don't have an owner's name. '68 Novas in general seem to be a hard find these days, let alone one with the L79 motor. -Jon 1967 Z28 street car 1967 Z28 Trans Am race car 1967 Z28 Registry |

If you see a 1968 nova...that does not have a motor in it ...are there any tell tale signs that would identify the car as having come with the l79 motor?...anything on the trim tag???

Hot Rod magazine tested one early in '68 and it is not an SS.
I have the dealer order form for the '68 Nova and the L48 option has "Nova SS" listed with it. The L79 engine, shown in one area as "350 hp" does not include the SS mention.

Unfortunately, there is really nothing on the car to denote the possibility of it being an original L79. Most of us Nova guys would be thrilled to see a '68 Nova with a 327, whether it be an L79 or L30. The '68's are neat cars, many unique items on them that make them interesting to look at - especially the BB cars!
If your friend has the VIN # for that L79 Nova, do a title search - you might get a hit. I'd love to see the bill of sale on it, after you find the car of course!

Your only real shot on IDing this car is if the original block is there. 68 L79s have their own codes ep or mk. One for 3spd one for 4spd. I've seen one of these cars way back in 69, and I have a correctly coded block. They were real quick! Schonye

I had a black/black '68 L79 back in '73. For what it was, it ran really great. It had 14" Cragar mags. Real sanitary. It was NOT an SS option car. That car started my luv for Nova's. I am a kinda big person, was not real comfortable in it with bench seat, so I sold it and bought an L79 '68 Chevelle hardtop with buckets and no console, also black/black, fit me better, and which promptly was stolen/disappeared about 2 months later..
I couldn't afford a 396 car then, so I went the sb route, not having a clue how much rarer they were then.. If only the clock could be turned back.. J

One of the most famous 68 L79's around was none other than Bill Grumpy Jenkins'. The car came through with the 327-325hp. Put the big block in to run SS/D. [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/
