Toll road: I-70/I-76 in Pennsylvania

Just wondering if any of you PA guys could give us a rough estimate of what we are looking at for toll from where I-70 meets with I-76 (Pittsburgh area) all the way until York, PA. It looks better than going US-30 from there on, but dad's gonna be in the big truck/trailer (5 axels) so the tolls may get a little steep!

Also, anyone came through West Virginia/Kentucky? Any better?

If you are coming eastbound on I-70 best to stay on 70 until you hit Scranton PA and get on the toll there. If you go north to Pittsburgh you are going out of your way.

Scranton? Looks like I-70 meets up with I-76 just south of Pittsburgh, which is a LONG WAYS from Scranton!

Looking for the best route from the west, but not wanting to pay an arm/leg in tolls. What kind of road is US-30? Would it be better to suck it up and stay in 70/76? We are trying to get to the York show.

I70 meets the PA turnpike just southeast of Pittsburgh, (one exit before Brian's), and will take you approx. 4 hours to get from there to the exit for the York show, (exit 18, Route 83 South. Take Route 30 West when you approach York since the fairgrounds are on the west side). The tolls cost a car about $6, you could probably triple it for the multi-axle setup. PA's tolltakers don't always seem to know what class a particular vehicle is in, sometimes I'm class 1, other times I'm class 2 - go figure!

PS: As you drive through that remote western part of PA, just think about all the Yenko cars that are hidden up in those mountains!!

We will get on the PA Turnpike at Donegal and run it to old exit 18. Two past Carlisle. Then take 83 South right into York and the fairgrounds. This is the best way for us. US 30 is not a great road in places...BKH

Well, someone sent me a link to a toll cost page, and since we'll fall under class 4 or class 5 (is it actual weight or registered weight?) it looks like it will cost about $15-$20, which is VERY reasonable. I'm asssuming that's TOTAL cost, as it lists the mileage as well as the cost...so, I'm guessing you pay to enter/exit the tollway, not at a toll plaza every so many miles?

I was worried it was gonna be like the Will Rogers in OK that cost Mo and I about $7.50 at EACH STOP, and that was with the little trailer...we came back a different way. I also talked to a guy at the Factory Stock race in Norwalk that came from Minnesota via the I-80/I-90 mess, and he racked up about $80 in tolls, just on the way TO the event! He went a different route on the way home as well.

You guys are talking about my old backyard! I grew up in Belle Vernon where I-70 crosses the Monongehela. Who's Brian? He must live in Youngwood if it's the exit before the turnpike! And yes, there ARE some hidden cars in them thar hills! I know of a few!
Anyway, I-70 is a little narrow through there and don't plan on making great time. Speed limits are 55 for a good reason. Once you get on the Turnpike though, It's great cruising from there on. There's some really good pizza & food in that area!

On the way out to GM@Carlisle I got off the turnpike at Bedford and took U.S. 30 as far as Chambersburg to see a little of Americana. Great road if your driving an appropriate vehicle (one of those being trailered [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif[/img]), but with a tow vehicle and trailer [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif[/img].

Those are my old stomping grounds. I spent 21 years in the Bedford area and the next 8 years driving Old RT30 from Bedford to York just about every weekend. Now I've spent the past 3 years in Oklahoma and I only get back there once maybe twice a year.
