Yes, they were left in place. Theoretically, cast iron intakes got painted brackets, and aluminum intakes got bare steel ones. I'm sure there must be some exceptions.

67-69 Z/28s I've seen that are known to be original all had orange brackets. A few months ago someone posted vintage photos of an L78 '69 Chevelle; the front lift bracket was not orange.

Here is the vintage pic of the engine compartment that I originally posted in the Mr. Ed thread. The motor is an L78.

Ours were silver. I think it was just some sort of silver paint.

Keith I know that this is off topic, but didn't you say that there was originally no 427 or horsepower rating decals on your air cleaner? How about the other two guys you knew that bought COPO Chevelles back then?

The emblem that I put on the breather lid was one from 1966 or 1967. The red wire and ballast resistors, on the firewall, were part of a points triggered Delco CD ignition kit that I also had installed. Still have the CD kit in the original box. None of the three cars had breather decals. I think the Tonawanda decal was the only one under the hood. Mine didn't have a posi decal in the trunk either.
