"The trick here is there's no one to contest it (I don't think!)."

Be careful here as the vehicle value now as it sits may not be enough for someone to contest title....it's later when you've got your failed marriage and left nut into it, that's when the value may be worth someone's time and money spent on legals?

If indeed you did make a verbal deal with the biker-owner guy, do you even know yet if the title is or ever was in this character's name? . Run the Vin and if in someone else's name, you may have better luck trail to follow anyway? . If in his name or not in the database, keep whatever results for your file. . . If you know when you made the verbal deal with the owner, get this stuff written down in the file before you forget it and keep everything in a format that's organized if it ever has to be presented. . I take it the shop owner is still around and it was his "aquaintance's" car? . Perhaps you can persuade the shop guy to provide a storage bill on the car that you can pay in lieu of the remaining balance you owe on the deal? . I'd suggest an extra amount of $ too as good ol' cash just seems to work wonders sometimes! . If the shop guy is a go, before you pay the cash or move the car, post the standard newspaper ad w/ brief description of the vehicle including the Vin looking for the owner to come forth if he has any interest in the car....this is an important part to include in the file (hopefully this Vin isn't a Mopar V-Code or Hemi car or something that attracts attention to other enthusists....if so, lets rethink this part). . Do any personal searches you can for the guy always printing off the results for the file. . Take pictures of the car as and where it sits noting current condition for the file too. . If you're doing the storage deal w/ the shop guy, make sure you get something in writing stating what's transpired and file it too. . As discussed, getting the title is the easy part, defending it if necessary the hard part. . If you're organized (and especially if the opponent isn't) you have great reason why someone wouldn't bother fighting. . If they do, you stand a greater chance of sucess anyway. . Good luck! . Can you tell us what the car is now? ~ Pete

I don't know about this one.... It looks like this vin tag had rusted for years and was ripped off with a pair of pliers... What are the odds it could actually be married to another car today and look like it belongs Hopefully someone ripped the tags off and locked them away to keep someone from building a fake. I know there are some guys who do that.. Theres no telling.. .. But I'd guess that vin tag off this car was probably unusable.. (other than as a model to make a fake tag from.... )

I parted out a 72 W-30 hardtop 15 years ago. Before the hulk went to the scrap heap I removed the vin and data plate to ensure no one else got them. Still have them.

Pete, it's a '69 375hp Nova, triple blue, a/t console (please note correct spelling of 'console', the city 'counsel' doesn't meet between the seats!),motor and 12 bolt gone,th400 still there. Rear of car BADLY rusted.Another nova was in the deal that is 100% rust free, you can guess what the plan was. The shop guy got them in a trade,no title for either one,non-rusty one was a drag car and 375 car hasn't been drivable for at least 20-25 yrs.Titles supposedly long gone. This car is saveable, the int. is in it...good shape, lots of work and a CE motor and it could be proud again,I just hate to see them die after they've survived this long. I'm afraid our wonderful Gov't may end up with it and you know they'll just kill it.

I make mistakes too, and hate to be a stickler. But, the city 'counsel' is who would present the case to a judge. The city 'council' meets at the city/county building.

How do you know it's a L78 car....trans? . And have you run the Vins already to see if they're in anyones name? . If you're following leads, don't forget to ask for old motors and documents while you go. . Don't give up....persevere and you'll get through it. . Good luck! ~ Pete

I think that VIN and tag from a 72 W30 would definitely be worth saving with the X in the VIN denoting W30. Previous years don't do that, as you know.

That VIN plate from the 69 Hurst is quite valuable as there is a listing of all the VINs of the 69 Hursts that was found at Demmer. Would be interesting to peel back the floor or trunk floor in the area of the frame stamps and compare that number to the listing..............or not.......
