Default Oil filter age

There is a thread in the for sale section that I did not want to hijack. There was some discussion about using older oil filters. This topic came up periodically when I used to have my parts stores (and thus merchandise we would take back on stock adjustments).

The rule of thumb I was told my the rep (from Wix Filters) was 7 years old. More than that, it should not be used. The concern was the deterioration on the filter media, deterioration of any glues used, as well as deterioration of any rubber used as drainback valves.

Now having said that.........keep in mind they are in the filter business to sell. They also need to manage any sort of liability in the event of an engine loss.

While many people use older filters with not a second thought nor any problem, I myself cannot see where the risk is worth the reward. These engines are just too expensive.

Not looking to start a debate, but just offer a word of advice to whom ever may find it useful.

Tim
