I'm not sure what has changed but have used synthetic fluid in various cars since 1978 without issue. I have a car which has silicone fluid since 2001 and zero leakage/issues.

I've heard stainless steel sleeves and the new seals are the issue. I believe most if not all rebuilders will not warranty due to leakage issues.
