"someone may have sprayed a new chemical on a field that adversely affected the birds. Or someone may have used poison to kill rodents; if the rodents died outdoors and the eagles consumed their carcasses, the birds could get sick too."
Probably the answer right there. Bee colonies were dying in large numbers and we are learning that new chemicals used in agriculture may be the cause. Some farmer probably put D-Con in a chicken coop to kill rats and the eagles ate the dead rats. |

Sad story. Pisses you off.
A few years back I was watching this live stream every now and then..At one time the Eagles managed to get small deer in their nest for feeding. AWESOMESAUCE! You can catch the live stream at the link. There are 3 eggs in the nest now. http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles |

I think that's an Osprey with the full white chest in the tree.

Now that I look at it..I think you are correct...the bird was a quite a distance from the boat we were in. There are a lot of Osprey's in our part of the woods, so it makes sense.
Here is an early morning shot [approx. 7am] a few years back...fog rising from the water...sun coming up...2 young lads and their dad in a boat fishing for native brook trout...doesn't get any better than this! ![]()

Reminds me of the boundary waters area of Ely Minn., nothing like the untouched scenery there; indian rock paintings, bear, moose, bald eagles, loons. I need to get back, its been too long.

Lots of Osprey nest on the navigational sign post towers on the waters of south Florida in the spring. I've also had them pull fish out of the rivers here in the fall while I was fishing. They dive bomb into the water talons first, and usually they don't miss catching a fish. A lot more impressive hunters than the bald eagle which is mostly a scavenger.
