You can read "US" but it's not real pronounced...Joe

To me, that's a good sign of probable originality that it's not a nice clear stamp.

----All the machined pads should be bare metal as they were machined after the case was painted. That's why so many stampings on the front are rough from rusting. As well, the dates I have seen are often illegible. Not sure why......Bill S

There are quite a few 309s where the casting date is completely illegible.
