By the way - in September of 1986 I followed my pickup truck (which I still have) down the line as it was being built.
It didn't occur to me to keep any of that paperwork (build sheet, inspection tickets) either until just recently.
We weren't really thinking about posterity back then; we were just trying to get product out the door.
