A very good presentation. Peter does a great job of explaining the car perfectly. Thanks for posting this one! I’ll have to see what chassis number it is. I think I know it, but need to confirm. I wish I could be as articulate as him during a presentation!
One commonly misunderstood thing is regarding Elvis owning two of them, when in fact, he didn’t. Peter says he ordered two which isn’t the case and its lore has continued in many stories of 507 history. Chassis #70079 was a demonstrator by BMW and campaigned by Hans Stuck in a few races before Elvis bought it. Elvis bought the car from a dealership owned by Heinrich Gustav Wirth where he explained “I sold the used car to Elvis for $3,750. The factory price was $7,500.”
The second car that was associated with Elvis was never owned/registered or ordered by him either, and it wasn’t new. Elvis starred in a movie “Fun in Acapulco” in 1963 with Ursula Andress. He tried to give Ursula a Cadillac convertible as a gift which she refused. She told him if he wanted to give her a gift, she would like the BMW he had in Germany. That car had since been sold years prior, so another white BMW (chassis #70192) was gifted to Ursula. This was given to her in 1963/1964 timeframe after the movie was released. Remember that production ended in 1959 so he could not have ordered this one either . The original owner of that car is known in BMW records as is all the whereabouts of all remaining chassis numbers.
Fun stuff learning the history of these cars!
Cheers
