Rex, they were probably for Grand Sport Corvette, Chaparral, or simply for development/experimentation. I guess Indy is another possibility since Smokey did try a "stock block" Chevy there.

When I saw this engine it was in the car and it looked drivable at the time. Just speculating on this... I'm thinking it was a "one off". It seems to be the ONLY one in existence, so if GM was going use them for Trans Am etc would you think they would have made more?
We would have seen more of them too... Smokey had lots of pull, could he have got Winters to make just one?

Hi Jon,

Good to hear from you. These blocks were a little too late to the dance for the Grand Sport program but I'm sure some of the technology derived from the 377 GS alloy engines found its way to these casting numbers. Jim Hall's Chaparral program is a definite possibility but I'm not sure about the Trans Am cars as they were closely monitored by the SCCA and to the best of my knowledge those cars were required to run stock blocks. Please correct me if I am wrong. I thought I was wrong about something last week but as it turns out I was mistaken about being wrong. LOL
