Default 440 Engine in a Roadrunner

Does anyone know if you could order as an option a 440 ci 4bbl engine in a 1968-70 Roadrunner? I know the 440 6 pack was available as an option around mid year 1969, but I'm talking about the 440 engine with just a 4bbl like would have come standard in a GTX. I have seen a few, 1969 Roadrunners especially, thru the years with a 440 in them but never could find out if they came from the factory like that. Thanks.

No. The 440 was never available in the standard Road Runner. You might see a 70 Runner with the U engine code, but what you're seeing is a converted Superbird, not a regular Road Runner.

For the 69 "Roadrunner", not the GTX or SB, the big engine option was the 6 pac 440 and a 383 4 barrel. I could be wrong, but I believe that was the options. We are restoring a 69 383 4 barrel 4 speed car for one of our repeat customers with a large collection right now.

How about"Project SIX PACK" 1969 1/2 440-6BBL Road Runner by Struse*Smith*Welsh. Was created by Chrysler engineering to fill the gap between the 440 Magnum and the street HEMI;many owners having found the HEMI too difficult to tune and maintain for street driving.

According to a little research I did, I was apparently mistaken. The engine options were:

1969 Plymouth Road Runner Engines

383 V8 335 hp @ 5200 rpm, 425 lb-ft @ 3400 rpm.
440 V8 375 hp @ 4600 rpm, 480lb-ft @ 3200 rpm.
440+6 V8 390 hp @ 4700 rpm, 490 lb-ft @ 3200 rpm.
426 Hemi V8 425 hp @ 5000 rpm, 490 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm.

The four barrel 440 in a Road Runner story is myth that's existed since... well probably since the cars were new. I'm confident in saying the only way a 440 four barrel ended up in a 68-70 Road Runner is a dealer build (excluding the Superbird, or course.) I've heard the 440 Road Runner story a thousand times. Every time I've been taken to see one of these cars, it's ended up as a 383 with a 440 swap, or a Six Barrel car with a single four intake swapped in place of the three two's.

I suppose it's possible one was built. No physical reason it couldn't have been. But I live awfully close to Missouri, and so far nobody has ever shown me. If someone ever does find one, I suspect it will be parked right next to a 71 LS6 Chevelle.

From 1972-74, if you wanted a 440 in a Road Runner, it was part of the GTX package.

Which site did you use? Because it's WAY wrong.

wasn't there a problem with 68 road runners catching fire. I think it was the 625 cf carter carb that had plastic floats that would leak and flood out and catch on fire
There was no 440 in at the 68 runner not to say there was more than a few that ended up with one

The 440 was not offered in the Road Runner. If an anomaly exists, the onus to document such a car falls on the owner. Otherwise, it's merely speculation. Are we to wonder whether more than a few Road Runners ended up with a Slant Six too?
