Originally the Pontiac RAIV 400 did not get it's name from a sequence of RAII then RAIII. Initially Pontiac engineers wanted to offer real ram air for the 1969 GTO. So they "borrowed" a page from the Olds engineers with their 1967 W30 RA setup and went one better.
The proposed RA setup was to have two outlets behind the front grille and in addition, the two hood scoops. 2 + 2 = 4. . . RAIV. But in the interim, they beefed up the 400 a little and called it a RAIII. When the 4 inlet RA setup was not approved, then it became part of the sequence. If it had been approved, there would not have been a RAIII. |
