The 1964.5 Mustang first appeared on the Silver Screen in the movie GOLDFINGER. The movie producers wanted James Bond to drive a car full of gadgets that had to work. Ford wanted the opportunity to provide such a car but the filming required a car prior to the summer of 1964. The white Mustang convertible was either a very early production car or a pilot car. Ford was unable to provide the needed hero car but decided to build it as a show car.
