I used to run strictly AC plugs. After reading Toms's posts about NGK plugs I gave them a try because I was having a miss at cruise rpm in my new 406. After putting the NGK plugs in it, I've had great results. The engine runs so much better. I have since put NGK plugs in everything else I own and I noticed a performance/drivabilility improvement in each vehicle. Whats great about it is that they are only $2. I have an auto restorer magazine at home that I recently got in the mail and they did a comparison on 12 or so different spark plugs. They ranged in price from about $1.50 to $12.00. The regular NGK plugs won the contest. The next time I go home I'll try to scan the article in so everyone can read it.

I have one box of the old AC43N plugs left and will keep them for the COPO engine. I'll have to try the NGK plugs from now on in the 396. I used them years ago in my snowmobiles when the Bosch plugs just didn't work. We didn't need to carry spare plugs after that.

I used NGK plugs in my 67 442 and it was night and day compared to the AC plugs I was using. They really woke up the motor. Very inexpensive hp increase.

If anyone is looking for pretty near an exact copy of the AC 43N in NGK the number is B7ES. I've been running them for a couple of years and have had terrific luck with them.

I too have had good luck with NGK.

I have also done a bunch of research on how plugs are made. Champion is sort of unique in manufacturing. If you've got any laying around, you can actually unthread the metal plug connector form the porcelain. You can then see the talc, spring and resistor (or not depending). Kinda neat to see the anatomy of a spark plug.

I would suspect that if Champion is making AC plugs, they would be making them to AC spec, and not necessarily their own. I bet you can still unthread a Champion end, while the AC plugs probably are assembled as they always were. Not saying anything about the quality of the old vs new other than they are not equivalents of each other just because Champion makes both.

NGK's!!!! Endorsed by the Hillbilly Racing Team!!!! Even makes my old boat hum!

[/ QUOTE ]

Spot on! I just ordered up a spare set of NGK's to swap out - mine is starting to stumble a bit because I've been idling around town with the track fat jets in it. I'm suspecting they are a bit fouled, we'll see!

[/ QUOTE ]I only run the old AC plugs. Maybe the new ones are junk. I tried the NGK's and had good results but they did seem to foul a little around town over the older AC's. I am a little rich in the primaries too. I also had good luck with the Autolite 85 or 86's.
