Default Re: Look What Fell In The Door - A "FORD" SVO Mustang

I owned dozens of these in the late 80's, none of the dealers wanted a used Turbo but a lot of people that "knew" them would pay decent $$$$ for a nice one

the 85 1/2 model was the best version, highest hp - I had two of those, one was a competition prep version (like the 1LE)

fun to drive, handle well, factory Konis (6!!!), 4 wdb, forged front suspension, pricey when new ... the LX & GT 5.0 had the same HP but more torque

I averaged over 100mph on a stretch in KS on the way to a race in Salina and still got over 20 mpg - great cars, looks like you have a nice one

they didn't catch on and Ford pulled the plug (much like the Lincoln LS)

I know how to set them up for autox use ...

These are cool cats for sure. Helps to have a hood that look great and the 1986 headlamps are the most pleasant of the bunch.

There is a fellow I've seen on another forum who is/has adapted a Volvo DOHC 4 vale head to the Ford 2.3. I real shame they never did any cool Cosworth stuff to the SVO, but I'm sure the old 2.3 can hold its own with the help of some modern tech. My old 1987 Audi sure responds well to 23 psi! Go get 'em!

These four bangers are no joke. 2.3 powered Foxes have been deep in the 8's in the quarter using a raised deck Motorsport block and ARCA head. Not that you can find any of that crap anymore, but since I've seen SVO's run mid-9's with the original block and head still in place, it doesn't matter much. You can go plenty fast enough without anything too exotic.

Whatever you do with it Wayne, it's a good looking car. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
